November Light

Written on the occasion of Annie Andrews, MD
running for the office of US Senator from South Carolina

Each November the light
along this Carolina coast
changes as though the air
itself has learned to hold
the sun’s golden tone.
Next year, when that light
of autumn returns,
there is hope, too,
for a tonal shift of another sort,
a shift not only in light, but in life—
our communal life as a state
and a nation that stands
for justice,
for liberty,
for integrity.
A shift requiring our voice,
our vote, and our resolve
to stand firm
against injustice,
against intolerance,
against avarice.
May we aspire to be that light,
to be a beacon of change,
to kindle an illuminating shift
in tone by bolstering leaders
who possess the vision to recognize
and the commitment to work
toward restoring the golden light
of hope and noble possibility
for this nation and the future
of its children.
